Is "MySpace" really MY space?

This just about sums up facebook. Whatever happened to the art form of letter writing? What happened to phone calls and face to face interaction? While this on line network definitely has its advantages - imagine how this will impact our childrens' lives. My generation grew up writing to pen pals in elementary school. We didn't get a cell phone or our own computer until college and for most of my friends - way after. Because this invention was introduced into our already socially developed lives, these on line networks do not have as much of an impact on us as it will our children.

On the upside, our children become technologically savvy, they hone in on their computer skills are the sky is the limit when their curiosity arises. On the downside, there are child predators, endless sites of free on line pornography, and web programs encouraging voyeurism. Personally for me, social networks such as Facebook and MySpace have caused the biggest blow up fights imaginable. From my boyfriend's stalking ex-girlfriends (yes, plural) to my own past stalkers... and even myself... when do you advise someone they are essentially abusing a good thing? While my own experiences have been minuscule compared to others' experiences, how did we as a society let it get so out of hand?? Children are being abducted, men are stalking women (and vice versa), and young children are pleading for help, to an on line forum, of their own mental health problems...

Of course, pretty much everything is good in moderation (within reason). So when is enough enough?

Has it really become the norm to email your colleague next door, or IM a sibling in the next bedroom? Is it really OK to opt for convenience over intimacy? And overall, are these social networks a great tool for communication or a detriment to personal relationships?
